Hi all,
I wasn't sure if this topic belonged on the geeks are uss, or rant board, but here I go.
When I'm in a skype call, it sounds like I'm talking on a cell phone in a basement, if you know what I mean. You can hardly hear what somebody's saying sometimes, and we get disconnected. I'm thinking my internet is the problem being so unstable. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem?
Katie

If you have an older version of skype and the people you are talking to have a newer one, then that could be the problem, or if you have a new version and the people you talk have the old one.
Does it sound like their head is in abox, and is it a bit distorted? That's what mine sounds like when it has a bad connection.

buy a USB headset if you don't have one already.
I used skype for work as a phone salesman and found that a USB headset made all the difference.

lol what sucks for me is the stupid internal microphone that I'm stuck with at the time. Although for some reason, if you are using the old version of skipe with anyother one that is newer or the contrary, file transfer tend to race.

Yes, it does sound like someone's head's in a box, or a cell phone with bad reception. I' almost positive it's my connection, but I'll have to see what version of skype my friends use.

Yes, this should be moved to the geeks are Us board.

Post 10 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Tuesday, 19-Feb-2008 13:01:03

Oops, my mistake. This topic could be moved there. I even have the same problem when I call the skype call testing service, which is automatically one of you're contacts when you first install the program.

when my friend got skype here in the states, she sounded crystal clear, did not break up at all. now that she is back in her country of cayman islands, the quality of the skype calls that we make to each other are diminished.

I don't really use skype for phone calls. I mostly do messages and maybe once in a blue moon I'll voice chat. Although I haven't got a really good mike to use though. One way I tested the phone call thing after my ten minutes was used was to call my 800 A.T.T. card since it allows you to call 800 numbers free of charge and I called someone with it. I ened up spend some minutes on my card but I wanted to see how much delay there was. It wasn't bad but I wouldn't rely on it nor pay for the premium service to make unlimited calls as long as I'm not going to really use it. It was neat to hear my A.T.T. card prompted me to press buttons over my keyboard. I had to get used to the star being shift 8 command and a pound being shift 3 and I might even have those reversed since I have to look to know.

I wouldn't use skype for day to day phone calling, especially with the tts software I use. Not everyone's going to accept that, and my talking software would create unwanted delays.

well I tried something just for the hell of it this weekend. So I have a bit of skype news since my last message. I found an old calling card that I forgot about in one of my jackets and it still worked and it had just under 500 minutes so I wanted to spend some of it since it was a surprise I had it. So wile I was in conversation with someone just talking computer to computer I transfored the call to my cordless phone so I was able to use skype remotely. I still have a few hundred minutes left as I didn't use the card for long but it was pretty neat. I was able to transfor skype to my phone. Now I guess that's not much news for someone who's used this program for years but I'm just getting used to it.

First off, do a skype update, or grab skype from the skype website. next make sure you have at least a dsl connection otherwise your connection will sound like crap and make sure you aren't doing anything resource intensive or that you aren't downloading anything. Also just to add, I have a pet peeve about skype. People who don't have a mic!!! LOL. It isn't very fun talking to Microsoft mary for a few hours. seriously get a usb headset they sound absolutely good. But just to put it out there, if any of you are audiophiles, get audio tx communicater it make skype sound like complete crap. we're talking audio that is cd quality of 320 kbps bit rate. It works as a demo but will hang up on you. you need to only forward 1 port to receive calls and I am still looking for a registration key for it no one seems to have one. For the dude who complained about advertisers. Take your damned status off skype me. People will be able to find you if it is on that. Keep it off that and they will nto call you.

Another thing I absolutely hate about skype is that when I talk to people who don't where headphones and then I hear everything in the background, and especially if I have more then one of them in a confrence. There is nothing wrong with whereing headhpnes. Then, then, when I want to talk to someone else who actually is quiet and wheres headhpnes I can't hear them because other people are drowning them out. Talking on skype on a macbook, not a good idea.

I like to keep Skype Me mode on, incase any Greeks or jother interesting people want to chat. But I keep getting these idiots who don't speak english that well and don't speak Greek at all, and who are rude! they always ask to see me on webcam and ask for sex etc. When I tell them that I'm blind, even if they do speak english somewhat decently, they don't get it. I finally settled on "my eyes don't work" which most get. Then, I tell them "I have a boyfriend and am not interested" and they still persist! Now, don't get me wrong, I've met a few nice ones, including some Greeks, but some are just downright annoying. The best was the Egyptian who, during our second conversation the first was a quick hello or something), wanted me to marry him so he could be a U.S. citizen! lol After I finally convinced him that I wouldn't, he then wanted me to sponsor him and give him money! Needless to say, he's deleted and blocked. I also have this guy who messages me only in French, and says he doesn't know english. He won't even try to message in english, even though I told him I don't speak French. So I just message him in Greek and laugh. And what's up with all the Algerians! I barely even heard of Algeria until I started using Skype regularly. Ah, the joys of skype.

I don't even bother to add people I don't know.

Post 22 by silly widdle dwagonish thingy (i'm stuck !) on Thursday, 20-Mar-2008 15:44:14

yeah i know you cant add yuourself, (answer to the answer to my gripe), i have at least 3 names for skype lol
anyway my olther problem and this might be my crappy cable isp, since i got their stupid phone service(yeah roadrunner has phone now), skype and uploads are really aweful. my audio starts out fine but then like 5 or 10 minutes into a call I have been told I break up and this isn't skype but uploading is really pathetic; e.g 14.4k uploads for cable?now i know that isnt great, but u think they would believe me?

Post 23 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Thursday, 20-Mar-2008 15:46:42

Sometimes the sound quality starts out good and goes down hill on my end but I sound fine to the other people i'm talking to.

Post 24 by Squiggles (Account disabled) on Thursday, 20-Mar-2008 20:55:31

hey genius don't put skype me mode on. that is why you get all those lunatics.

Post 25 by Eleni21 (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Thursday, 20-Mar-2008 23:10:29

I know, but if I don't put it on, I'll miss out on possibly meeting some great friends.

Post 26 by purple penguin (Don't you hate it when someone answers their own questions? I do.) on Thursday, 20-Mar-2008 23:24:30

I don't even have it on ' skype Me, and I'll occasionally get random adds I never heard of.

Post 27 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Friday, 21-Mar-2008 8:47:59

I never use skype me. Never!

Post 28 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Friday, 21-Mar-2008 23:13:32

neither do I. Cody, leave microsoft mary out of this. She'll get a microphone. And as for the part about the drowning out, what if we don't wanna wear headphones? That's ym if I'm gonna do something, and I know its gonna take more then 5 seconds, because of your sensitive ears, I do it on my windows laptop, so u won't staart screaming at me to put on headphones. Nice story about the egyptian. hahah.

Post 29 by audioadict (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Wednesday, 26-Mar-2008 1:44:11

Yeh Cody. Leave my text to speech program out of this! I may get a mic someday, maybe when I move out of the house? I don't know.
